National Corndog Day

Milwaukee's first NCD was a success. In Wisconsin tradition, we kept the beer local (lots of cans of High Life and Red Dog) and brought in Milwaukee Brewers Secret Stadium Sauce as a new condiment (a great mix similar to a ketchup/BBQ/sauerkraut juice).

The award winners
- Luke Graham: First Triple-Double (intentional) in the history of Wisconsin. A powerful performance.
- Jeff Moessner: Milwaukee NDC co-host recorded the second TD in style.
- Jake Creecy: with less than 10 seconds left in regulation, Jake pushed dog and corn down completing the last Triple-Double of the day.
- Jenny Johnson, a DC alum, stopped by with her parents. Jenny's parents were so excited about NDC that they made up NDC shirts for everyone. That's enthusiasm.

This photo is definitely PG-13. Eric "King" Fisher upon completion of his triple double, and proud of it! Those last 6 tots almost got the best of him, but he stared them down and finished them off like a champ.

Well, for some reason I can't upload photos. So you will just have to imagine the proud parent of 5500 calories until I become less net-stoopid.

Chicago's first corndog day was a great success, but ended up with people passing out all over the living room around 10:00pm (myself and my dog included).
Total consumption - 150 corndogs, 35 pounds of tots, and way, WAY too much beer.
Honorable mentions:
Kevin McKenna - ate a triple-double in exactly 4 hours. Word on the street is that he's looking for leftovers. I will be delivering them this week.
Craig Grasty - ate a double-double, resulting in 14 corndogs in all. He just couldn't hack it when it came to the tots. We kicked him out at midnight.
Allyson Stapleton - A near triple-double. She had well over 10 beers, 100 tots, and was 1/2 way through her 10th corndog, when the dog came by and snatched it out of her hands. Then she gave up because she ate too much.
Mike O'Connor - ate 80 tater tots in 3 minutes.
Holly the Beagle - 2 documented corndogs, approx. 5 undocumented corndogs, and 2 beers. She ended her night puking on the bedroom floor and passing out on the couch. The next morning, I found her eating remaining tater tots that were sitting out all night.

Washington, DC put up the usual strong team performance, but had few outstanding individual performances. Total, we consumed about 320 dogs, 50 pounds of tater tots, and drank an untold amount of beer (PBR, Schlitz, the Beast, the Beast Light, the Beast Ice, Iron City, King Cobra, Miller Light, Bud, etc).

On the idividual side, however, we put forward one triple-double and three double-doubles, and were hurt by the early departure of two of our stallwarts, Scott Harper and Bob Turney.

Regardless, a good time was had by all, and pictures will be forthcoming.

San Diego's First CornDogDay

Vitals: 18 of us gathered, the next generation of NCD'ers representing (Zoe's 3rd NCD -- 2nd as a hostess). 14 NCD rookies gave a decent effort, 3 of us making the halfway t-d mark but no certificates issued.

Zoe was the 3rd youngest -- and let the way in corndog appreciation

Charlie (beagle/hound) got 2 dogs and was exiled. He wasn't even sorry.

National Corndog Day

So, i was awaken this morning to the Fed Ex guy at my door with two large boxes....Corndogs. It was ten times better than my usual waking up to Foldgers in my cup. Any who the plan was to go snowboarding here in Minneapolis and then returning to an all out dog party. But when my buddy suffered a spinal injury on the slopes it kind of changed our plans. After spending 6 hrs. at the hospital and being forced to watch the games on a small T.V. in the hospital we returned an cracked the box. It was like a treasure chest full of corndogs.

We popped as many dogs into the oven as we could and partied like it was 1999. I think these are the best corndogs on the market. They have the perfect ratio of meat?!? and breading. I was pleasantly impressed. Anywho, we still have an unopened box in the freezer for days to come.

Oh yeah and the spinal injury is all good, no surgury, he just needs to be in a neck brace for the next week.

We have finished the festivities with 3 official triple-double winners. "Easy-E", Gary Hostettler, and Ethan Parker all managed to run the gauntlet and enter the hall of fame. We also are currently through a keg and a half....to be continued????

Update from the first Phoenix party.

Well after a late start, (slight miscalculation in start times), we are off to a solid start. Actually better than expected due to the fact that all participants are amateurs save one. So what can be somewhat overwhelming at first, is being tackled like they have been in training all year. We've got four people half way there to the grand prize of NCD infamy. Even though we may seem weak in our eating efforts we have stepped up in our drinking. One participant has introduced us to the "Scooter". All you need is:

1) One clean cooler
2) 30 pack Milwaukie's Best
3) 2 liters Mt. Dew
4) One handle vodka, (preferably something cheap like Baker's Cup)
5) One container Country Time Lemon Aide.
6) Ice

--Put it all in the cooler and mix. It is a great change, and taste bud restorative concoction. Give it a shot, you'll feel refreshed and ready for more meat on a stick.

"Easy-E" (pictured below) was the first Portlander to go down for the count. After 10 beers, 100 tots, and 3 (ouch) corndogs he dropped to one knee and screamed "no mas". It was a sad day for all of us....

North Carolina Update!

We have got several achievers here in Chapel Hill. 8 dogs/6 beers/2 units tots for Mara, 7 dogs/6 beers for Kathy and the rest are stonewalling around 4 dogs. We feel confident that we will have at least 2 taking home regonition certificates at the end of the day.

UNC and Duke have advanced, so today we can just concentrate on eating. Looking forward to the Wake game tonight.

Is it possible to achieve a non-alcoholic triple double? One proposed approach is to consume 10 O'Douls. Is this the appropriate course, or is there another non-alcoholic option?

I've been told that some people out there are wondering about the homemade corndog. Andy Beahrs, the "chief fryer" at San Francisco's National Corndog Day party shares his recipe below. Those venturing into the homemade corndog realm for the first time should beware of two things. First, ventilation is important. In order to keep your house from smelling like fried food for weeks, open as many windows and turn on as many fans as humanly possible. Second, the process can be slow so be sure to start frying early. Also, make sure to have the traditional Foster Farms corndog available when supplies of the homemade variety run low.

1 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 cup milk
2 eggs
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Lots more oil for frying
10 hot dogs, sausages, pieces of mozzarella, or what have you
popsicle sticks

1. Toss together all dry ingredients. In different bowl, beat together milk, eggs, and the 1/4 cup of oil. Blend wet and dry ingredients until smooth. Heat frying oil in deep pot to 365 degrees (very important--too cool and they'll be soggy, too hot and they'll brown too fast).

2. Impale each hot dog on a popsicle stick. Just before frying, dip 2 or 3 at a time into batter--it's thick, so you might need to spread it a bit with a knife. Cover each entirely.

3. Fry 2-3 at a time, turning occasionally, for about 3 minutes or
until hot throughout and golden brown. Drain briefly on paper towels.

4. Devour with tater tots and beer. Watch basketball. Thank God for Corn Dog Day.

We get a lot of letters here at NCD Headquarters, ranging from the profound to the mundane to the commercial (more Cialis ads?). We've taken some of the best and republished them here to gain a wider audience. They (mostly) deserve it:

A sidenote, to explain my love of corndogs, in college I once made one of the pledges in my fraternity research the history of the corndog. At his weekly meeting, he was unable to tell us the names of any of our Founders. He explained that he did not have time because he had spent so much time researching corn dogs. It was a proud day for me.

Thanks so much for creating this wonderful event that combines two of the greatest things on earth, corn dogs and the NCAA Tournament.

I just recently moved to Bremerton Washington, it is directly west of Seattle Washington. I attended my first corn dog day in Washington DC last year and double doubled with the best of them. Due to my recent move I have decided that I would like to host my own corn dog day this coming year. It is time to spread this tradition far and wide. I have been telling people about the blessed event and I have about 50 people interested in attending.

One of the great challenges of NCD is counting the bounty of the Triple-Double. Brady Sahnow offers this wise advice on adopting an official standard at NCD:

The Statistics of Corndog Day

Keeping an accurate tally on dogs, tots, and beer (especially late in
the day) can be a source of controversy and frustration. To simplify
the process this year we will be officially adopting the scoring system
used by a small contingent of veteran NCD members for the past few
years. This method will be required for the official recognition of a
triple-double.
1) Each participant will receive a paper plate on which the name or
chosen optimistic moniker (i.e. big daddy, the eating machine, Dr. Dog,
etc, etc)is written.
2) After each corndog is finished the stick is punched through the paper
plate so that it is securely attached.
3) Tator Tots (the most difficult to track) should be served and
consumed in groups of 10. After each group is eaten a rip along the
edge of the plate is made. 10 rips in the plate's edge constitutes 100
tator tots.
4) Beer tabs from the cans should be taken off after the beer is
finished and dropped around the corndog stick. One beer for each stick
should total 10 beer tabs around 10 corndog sticks.

A decorated plate will be given to the party host for evaluation and
formal recognition of the magnificent feat that is the NCD
Triple-Double.
